The Eagle Garden
Across the road from the Eagle's Nest Lookout near Bancroft, a painting became a garden. Sherry Crawford — White Bear Standing — first painted her two eagles on canvas; then, with Fraser Young of Ecostructure Canada, the painting was drawn into the land itself: a giant eagle earthwork, six acres of paths and plantings that can only be taken in whole from the sky. It is part of the White Bear Standing Reconciliation Gardens — land cared for, food grown and given away, and a standing invitation for the eagles, who have not nested here in living memory, to come home. The little white car at the edge gives her scale: the work is enormous.
